[ARTIST STATEMENT]
The Past….
In the context of the modern society, I believe that an artist should not be constrained to one medium. An artist should not be classified by their race, age, sex or the medium they choose to work in. A painter is not always a painter, a sculpture does not always make sculptures. I do not make art in a specific medium, nor do I consider myself a multimedia artist. The work that I make is a visual language reflective of a personal philosophy, which often uses humor to soften a sometimes harsh critique of the modern world. "English Breakfast" was an installation based on people's thirst for public figures and icons. Why do we concern ourselves with things that have no bearing on our lives and overlook things that do?
The context of such works " Bright Idea", "Postmodern Etched", Fragile Mixed Media" stemmed from an increasing discontentment in a stagnant art world. These work talk specifically about the mythology of a postmodernist society. The myth that art can be made just by slapping something on to a canvas without any inclination, context, or material.
Coming from a postmodern pop culture society, we are over-sensitized by materials, product, media, icons, politics, and even art/artists. We sometimes find it hard to separate our needs and our interests.
The Present….
Even my current work which focuses on documentary photography, there is a humorous treatment of the subject and categorization of the images even if the topics are absolutely serious or completely mundane. Documentary photography is suppose to be illustrative of an event, but as the creator of the image the photographer creates the context to illustrate. The idea of truth being absolute is opposed, depending what the creator allows the viewer to see and what not to see. My interest in documentary photography is the narrative percieved by the viewer. It is important that they images are not altered by modern means, other than color correction and cropping.
Because we think, we perceive, judge and we phantom, there is alway the other… We're born, we live, we die is always going to be true, but there is alway a subtlety in the mundane and what we come across every day which can sometimes poignant. As in my earlier work my interest in art comes from humor and irony and how we internalize the world around us.
